Liwonde National Park

Day 13

Jessie and Chelsea, set up and ready to go.

Clinician's Brief

The last few days of our trip were spent camping at a resort near Liwonde National Park. When we arrived, after the 3-hour drive from Blantyre, we rode a water taxi to the actual resort, and saw a crocodile and a few hippos on the way. Chelsea and I took our travel friendship to a new level, setting up the 2-person tent we were to share.

In the afternoon, we all gathered for tea and cakes, supplied by the resort. As we sat down to eat, we were surprised by an unexpected (and nimble) guest: a monkey! He jumped on the table, stole a piece of cake, and scampered up a tree to enjoy the spoils of his victory. Later, he returned to gather the crumbs on the floor. We all had a good laugh watching him.

At sunset, we went on a game drive and saw a number of different animals, including impalas, monkeys, warthogs, and hippos. The sunset itself was breathtaking.

We drove back to the resort after sunset—a night safari can be pretty exciting. We saw hippos on land (including a baby!) and a mongoose. Our guide, McCloud, pointed out a chameleon in a tree while the spotter shined a light. That was impressive!

Tomorrow, we have a water safari for a few hours, will do a little shopping, and then head back to Fisherman's Rest. We are enjoying our time, but are also getting excited to wrap up the trip and head home.—Jessie Foley
