Case
Ziggy, a 22-lb (10-kg) 14-year-old neutered male crossbreed dog, is presented for fever and a firm, painful swelling ventral to the right eye. Stage C myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) had been diagnosed previously, and he was recently treated for congestive heart failure (CHF)(Figure 1). Pimobendan (0.5 mg/kg PO total daily dose divided and administered every 12 hours) and furosemide (2 mg/kg PO every 12 hours) were administered, and recheck radiographs revealed normal pulmonary parenchyma.
On current examination, respiratory rate is normal (40 breaths/minute), and no pulmonary parenchymal abnormalities are found on auscultation. All serum chemistry values are within normal limits. A tooth root abscess is diagnosed, and a dental procedure with complete dental radiography is scheduled.
