You already know you can't "just drain it." Watch this video to see why.

Presentation & History

A 6-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented with fever and lethargy. Two weeks prior to presentation, the patient’s owner had drained the cat’s aural hematoma at home using a needle.

Examination

A temperature of 105.9°F was noted upon presentation. The ear was warm to the touch and a foul-smelling purulent material draining into the ear canal was observed.

Treatment & Outcome

This video shows the flush and removal of debris and infection. Afterwards, standard aural hematoma surgery was performed. The patient was discharged and recovered.
