November is here, and in many parts of the world, that means crisp, cooler weather, fall foliage, and the start of the holiday season. In the clinic, the holidays can bring heightened emotions, increased tough conversations, and a higher-than-usual number of euthanasias. Families with sick pets sometimes want to wait to make a decision until a child is home from college, or wait to make a decision so they don’t ruin a holiday; finances are often tighter than usual; and sometimes a new puppy or kitten meant to bring holiday joy becomes critically ill.
This time of year can be draining, adding to the emotional burden many veterinary team members already carry. Now is the time to check in with teammates, take care of yourself, and take care of each other.

Remember though that the holidays can also be filled with joy—pet photos with Santa, client holiday cards with beloved patient photos, delicious treats and thoughtful gifts delivered by clients, heartfelt thank you notes from families impacted by the care you and your team provide, and even some healthy, happy new puppies and kittens!
Soak up those moments of joy, store them up as a cushion for the heavy days, and know this season will come with highs and lows, but you can choose to focus on and hold onto the positive moments.
Wishing you many joyful moments this season!
