From Entebbe to Bwindi to Kabale

The first several days of being in Uganda have been full of exploration and discovery as we journey to meet the rest of the Mission Rabies team and begin our training.

In Entebbe, we stayed at Lake Victoria View Guest House and enjoyed dancing and drinks right on the edge of Lake Victoria. After spending our first night in Entebbe, we drove to Bwindi, home of the mountain gorillas.

Bwindi was one of the parts of the trip we had most been looking forward to. We woke up on our third day in Uganda full of anticipation—we would be hiking through the rainforest to visit the Mukiza family of gorillas. Although we started on a road (Photo 6), we soon entered the rainforest, where there are no trails. Our guide cleared our path with a machete. It was incredible to see these beautiful animals in their home, eating and playing together. We were all captivated by the babies (Photo 7) swinging around the branches!

We left Bwindi the next day for Kabale, where we would begin our Mission Rabies training. But first, we stopped along the way at Lake Bunyonyi, the deepest lake in Africa. Our guide, Noah, is native to the area and an environmental scientist, and is passionate about teaching conservation. We learned that Lake Bunyonyi has 29 islands, one of which contains a primary and secondary school.

The last few days have been a whirlwind since we arrived in Uganda, but we’ve barely gotten started! We can’t wait to meet the rest of the team and get to work.
